Family Satyridae Boisduval, [1833]

I’m not agree with opinion of L.E.Miller (1968) and others that the taxon Satyridae has a subfamilic rank in the family Nymphalidae. These family-group taxa differ very good at the family level by the wing venation, genital structures and wing pattern. In the wing venation the general difference is the dicked basal parts of veins on the forewing in Satyridae; on the forewing of Satyridae the veins R2 and R3 – R4 – R5 lie as two different veins, in Nymphalidae these veins lie in one vein. Genital structures of Nymphalidae are more differenciered that in Satyridae, valves of Nymphalidae allwais have sklerotyzed structures, in Satyridae these structures never to present. Wing pattern of Satyridae (especially in the underside) is very primitiv; it’s only belts or rows of spots without good differentiation (this differentiation is only in some groups of Satyridae), in Nymphalidae the wing pattern has a good visible differentiation, belts or rows of points or spots are asymmetric and more reduced, some elements of pattern are transformed.

I think that many lepidopterists have very great value to the cladistic classification and cladistic analysis. But cladistic analysis don’t have the base for good taxonomic analysis on the family-group level and don’t give the base for the cladistic system (=classification) (see for example Proceedings of the Zoological Institut of Saint-Pétersbourg, 1994: “Principles and methods of the zoological classification”).

In phylogeny of Dytrisia which proposed by O.Shields (1989) was used the haploid chromosome number. This number in Nymphalidae sensu Shields is 31. But this number is correct only for Nymphalidae by old authors, in Satyridae this number is 28. So it’s not good symplesiomorphy.

This is very important: in complex with primitiv genital structures, wing pattern and venation, the older than in Nymphalidae fossiles of Satyridae showed that Satyridae was an ancestral group for Nymphalidae, and Nymphalidae is a family which has progressiver characters than Satyridae.

Remark. A.G.Belik  (1996: 162) wrote: “The use of the name Erebia anyuica Kurentsov, 1966 constitutes a big problem. In fact it is still unclear which insect Kurentsov described under this name. Judging from the original description it superficially looks like a butterfly belonging to the E. magdalena species complex (large butterflies with a wingspan of 50 mm, completely blackish-brown without any trace of wing pattern on both upper- and underside – cf. Kurentsov, 1970: 57), while the structure of the male genitalia, figured in the original description, clearly shows that the species belongs to the E. dabanensis species group (cf. Kurentsov, 1970: 57, fig. 53, 2, 3). The Nearctic species E. occulta Roos & Kimmich, 1983 (= E. phellea Philip & Troubridge, 1983) has the same structure of male genitalia. [16.04.1998  from Referative Journal [I] has found out about the description of taxon ostracon for Oeneis excubitor Troubridge et al., 1982 from the Magadan region (...). One that excubitor is resulted for ours fauna, to which it does not concern, and in "Vestnik zoologii", where on this theme there was a detailed explanation of V.Lukhtanov (...), causes disappointment and surprise. The explanation said, that alpina and excubitor are different species. The similar butterflies of northeast of Asia can be connected only with alpina. By the way, and in the book "Butterflies of Russia" wrongly in the column of distribution of alpina there is "Alaska"]. It is a pity, certainly, that Y.P.Korshunov is so categorical – as follows from him of lines, he did not see not only material on excubitor, but also description (!!!). I bring in the chronological order of the citation about this species. "These classical taxonomic comparisons indicate that O. excubitor is distinct from all other nearctic species. Altough O. excubitor is very different from all other palaearctic species, its relationship with O. alpina (Kurentzov) is unclear. O. alpina is known from one specimen, captured by V.N.Kurnakov, 7 June 1953, from the barren rocks of the Omsuchansk (Kolyma) Range in the Magadanskaya Oblast, U.S.S.R. Kurentzov's figure (1970, p. 47, fig. 2) of the holotype is a line drawing and for our purpose, does not adequately illustrate this species. We have been unsuccesfull in our efforts to obtain colour photographs of this specimen from the U.S.S.R. Kurentzov's figure vaguely resembles O. excubitor on the ventral surface, altough the ventral hindwing of O. alpina is shown with less mottling than is present on that of O. excubitor, and the mesial band of O. alpina is shown to be very much darker than that of O. excubitor and more closely approaches that of certain examples of O. uhleri cairnesi (Gibson). Kurentzov's figure shows heavier spotting than 96% of the specimens of O. excubitor we have examined, with dorsal surface ocelli in cells M1, M3 and CU1 of the forewing and cells M3, CU1, and CU2 of the hindwing. The hindwing ocellus in cell CU2 is absent in all examples of O. excubitor that we have studied. Our most heavily spotted specimen of O. excubitor (...) approaches O. alpina on the dorsal surface, except it is missing the ocellus in hindwing cell CU2, and it has an ocellus in hindwing cell M1, which is absent in O. alpina. Kurentzov (1970, p. 50, fig. 1) shows the male valvae of O. alpina similar to certain examples of O. excubitor, but the uncus is shown to be much narrower than that of O. excubitor and is not narrowed at the base. This is a standard feature of O. excubitor and does not v[e]ry much in different specimens. Due to the aforementioned differences between O. alpina and O. excubitor, we must assume that they are separate species. Altough it is unlikely, it is possible that O. excubitor is actually a subspecies of O. alpina. A further analysis must await the collection of additional specimens of O. alpina" (Troubridge et al., 1982: 887). O. excubitor is very close to O. alpina (Troubridge et al., 1982). As the authors who have described O. excubitor, had not a comparative material on O. alpina, they supposed, that first is subspecies of the second. Comparison of a specimen of O. alpina with the paratypus of O. excubitor stored in the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of USSR, has confirmed the specific independence of last. O. alpina differs from O. excubitor by a little bit more light colouring of wings, much weaker development of marble pattern on the bottom party of hindwings, form of the middle belt on the underside of hindwing. The marble pattern at O. alpina is advanced only on border of hindwings. At O. excubitor it occupies all surface of  hindwings from the bottom party, besides it is well advanced on underside of forewings in them marginal  and submarginal parts. The author saw significant materials on Oeneis of group norna of vicinities of “Aborigen” station of the Tenkinsk district on the Magadan province (collected by G.A.Anufriev,  1987.), in which 2 specimens of this species were revealed (...) Besides in the collection of V.V.Baglikov  it was revealed 12 ♂♂ and 1 ♀ of this species; 2 ♂♂ of O. excubitor V.V.Baglikov has transferred to Y.B.Kosarev. The study of these specimens, and also images accompanying the description of a species, has allowed to conclude, that in territory of Palaearctis the species is submitted with subspecies distinct from nominotypical subspecies, having considerably smaller scope of variability in the sizes and wing pattern figure (Korb, 1996: 100). The presence in territory of Palaearctis of some nearctic species not is a nonsens, and there is a phenomenon well explained by two words:  the Beringian bridge. It is not necessary to forget about it.

Remark. V.V.Tshikolovets in his book (1997: 92 – 94) gives taxa centralis and leechi as different species without good basics. But in figures which give this specialist both taxa can be distinguished only in some charakters of wing colouration (leechi lighter than centralis), in pattern both taxa are not differ. This author do not give illustrations on subject of male genitalia and don’t give the differences based on male genitalic structures. So I place both taxa in one species with oldest name leechi.

More probably everything, it is a good species, but, as I did not see any specimen of  rajevskyi, here its status is accepted as subspecific.

esperi Koçak, 1981 (Pseudochazara). Priamus, Ankara, 1: 78. TL: South Russia. Had been originally described as a good species.

Remark. The name Papilio hippolyte Esper, [1784] is junior primary homonym of the name Papilio hippolyte Drury, 1782 (Koçak, 1981; Lukhtanov & Lukhtanov, 1994). Koçak has offered to replace the name of Esper with the name esperi Koçak, 1981; Lukhtanov & Lukhtanov have offered to keep the name of Esper  as it strongly has come in a scientific revolution. Necessity of replacement of the name hippolyte Esp. is dictated by Art. 57 (b) of the International Code of the Zoological Nomenclature. Inside a species designated by Esper as hippolyte, were described var. mercurius Staudinger, 1887, var. pallida Staudinger, 1901 and var. williamsi Romei, 1927. Them taxonomic status is not determined yet. At the analysis of variability of attributes of a wing pattern and structure of genitalia of  species of Pseudochazara close to hippolyte (P. turkestana (Grum-Grshimailo, 1893), P. euxina (Kusnezov, 1909), P. kopetdaghi Dubatolov, 1989, P. kanishka Aussem, 1980, P. droshica (Tytler, 1912), P. badachshana Wyatt and Omoto, 1966, P. rajevskyi Tshikolovets, 1996, P. alpina (Staudinger, 1878), P. beroe (Herrich-Schäffer, [1844]), P. mamurra (Herrich-Schäffer, [1844])), which status is well argued (Aussem, 1980; Coutsis, 1990; Dubatolov, 1989; Gross, 1978; Hesselbarth, 1987; Hesselbarth et al., 1995; Lukhtanov & Lukhtanov, 1995; Nekrutenko, 1985 a, 1990; Tshikolovets, 1996) has appeared, that for definition of the status of taxa inside group hippolyte it is best to use the following attributes: a) the form of an androconial field and b) the form of a submarginal belt on a forewing of the male. Attributes of genitalia are very variable. Being based on these attributes, I have come to the following: 1) specimens of  hippolyte from the type locality differ by an extensive androconial field of silvery-grey colour partially laying in a discal cell, partially – at anal of border of a wing, bordered with a submarginal belt; the belt has distinct narrowing on internal and two narrowings on the external party (are investigated 158 males); 2) specimens of  var. williamsi (type locality: "Sierra-Nevada" in Spain) (19 males are investigated) differ by an extensive androconial spot of grey colour which however never comes into a discal cell; the submarginal belt visible already, than at hippolyte also has narroving in the central part; 3) specimens of  var. mercurius (95 males are investigated) differ by a narrow bright – black androconial spot coming in a discal cell and occupying about 1/4 its part; a submarginal belt a straight line, without seen narrovings; 4) specimens of var. pallida (12 males are investigated) differ by a narrow bright-black androconial spot divided with veins into 4 parts; an external part of a submarginal belt without precise narrowings, its internal part with two good visible narrowings. All listed above attributes are very stable and practically are not subject to variability and allow confidently to speak about specific independence of each of analyzed taxa. Therefore Pseudochazara williamsi (Romei, 1927), stat.n. That all specified taxa are  good species, follows, that it is impossible to apply to a taxon hippolyte as replacing any of these names; the homonimy, thus, should be eliminated by a unique possible way – establishment of the new name, as was made by Koçak.
